A Brief History of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul
The Society of SaintVincent de Paul dates back to 1833. Frederick Ozanam and six other students started the society as a response to the poverty they witnessed in Paris, France. These university students offered comfort and assistance to the poor in their midst. They chose to name their organization after their patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
Saint Vincent de Paul was a French priest who lived in the seventeenth century in France. Saint Vincent de Paul dedicated his adult life to serving the poor. It was his spirit of service to the needy that Frederick and his friends hoped to emulate. And they did. Today the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul continues to minister to the poor in 144 countries on five continents.
The Society and Vincentians have been actively working to help alleviate the suffering of the needy in Windsor and Essex County since 1896. There are presently 29 conferences of the Society in Windsor and Essex County.
Since its inception in Windsor and Essex County the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has provided assistance to hundreds of thousands of our neighbours and friends. The men and women of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul continue to follow the example of their founders by working with humility and respect as they serve the poor, bearing witness to the love of God for all people.
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a lay Catholic organization whose mission is
...to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice and joy.
"Serviens in spe"
to serve in hope
The latin motto of The Society reflects its global nature and the Society's desire to serve the hope offered by Christ to all.
Vincentians Are Called...
...to alleviate suffering and its causes, serving everyone, regardless of race, creed, gender, opinion or age. Poverty doesn't always or necessarily involve being in need of material goods. We are all poor in one way or another.
